Cambrian Heights
The location of this 1950s bungalow was perfect for a forever home, but the outdated design posed significant barriers for aging in place.
The complete redesign of the floor plan began by relocating the staircase and reconfiguring the rooms to ensure the essential elements of home life were accessible on the main floor. A versatile U-shaped kitchen is bright and functional, featuring large windows, sous-chef seating, and strategically placed open and closed storage to keep everything at hand. Clean white upper cabinets, a porcelain countertop with maple cabinets beneath, and an aqua backsplash provide a peaceful atmosphere with a pop of playfulness.
The kitchen is open to the dining room, with patio doors to easily move the party outside in warm weather. The adjacent living room is set for conversation and backdropped by a custom millwork wall with glam wallpaper inlay, also found in the powder room down the hall. An “everything” room for leisure, work, or to host a guest with a loft bed, can be closed off using perpendicular pocket doors or be left open as an extension of the living room.
The primary bedroom and ensuite are a private sanctuary from the rest of the home. In the bedroom, a wall of whitewashed maple closets keeps the room uncluttered, with accent shelves for display. The spa-like ensuite is both luxurious and accessible, with some barrier-free elements and a material palette mirrored in other rooms in the house.
The final touches on this completely transformed home include a mudroom, a fully renovated basement, a revamped exterior, a new garage, and landscaping.
