Kelvin Grove House
This family home upgrade capitalized on underused spaces to elevate the functionality and style of the Kananaskis Drive home and create a sense of connection to the exceptional outside space.
The clients are long-standing residents in this home, located on a large lot typical of this inner-city community, and wanted to address a number of shortcomings in the building. Inside, the main floor was heavily renovated to reflect the 'order of operations' of modern living. Deep rich hues in the kitchen, dining and piano rooms complement chestnut wood millwork, lively gold, brown and black granite countertops, and new glass pendant lighting.
A rundown breezeway connected the house and street-facing storage shelter. Both were demolished and reconstructed to create an airy entertaining room complete with bar, fireplace and media centre, and an enclosed breezeway. The renovation has a softer, contemporary look with flat panel natural maple millwork, whitewashed cedar ceilings and rich cherry-coloured benches. The ceiling rises up towards large windows and doors that open onto a sunken aggregate patio surrounded by lawn. Outside, the under-used in-ground pool was filled and replaced with a rear-alley garage. Large trees and a new cedar fence and gate provide privacy, while flowerbeds, wood, flagstone, and pebble ground coverings enhance the greater site.
