West Hillhurst Suite
This above-garage secondary suite needed to be a one-space-fits-all solution for a professional family, including a mom that works shifts as a doctor, teenagers in need of a place to bring friends, and in-laws with some accessibility requirements.
The main area is bright and spacious, with an open-concept design, a new skylight, and an exposed I-beam to accentuate the height of the room. There is ample space to crowd around a game table or be the site of a foosball tournament. An in-the-woods feel was given to the office end of the room by installing two windows. Strategic placement of the desk ensures a view of trees and sky instead of neighbouring houses.
A galley-style kitchen packs a punch of flair with modern flat panel, high gloss cabinets that extend floor to ceiling and wrap up and around the ceiling to highlight the gabled frame. A subtle purple hue chosen by the clients was added to the cabinets to give the kitchen a truly personalized touch. Instead of a standard backsplash, the small space was given something unexpected in a landscape window above the sink, offering stunning views of downtown Calgary.
The private quarters are modest, but high-functioning with a Jack and Jill bathroom accessible from the bedroom or entryway. The bathroom includes a wheelchair-accessible shower, plenty of storage, and an under-counter washer and dryer set. To ensure that this suite is suitable for aging in place, structural framing was incorporated to allow for easy install of an accessible elevator in the future; perfect for when the in-laws move in.
