Sunnyside Residence
Our clients wanted a new main floor layout that brought the family together around a central kitchen, while providing complementary connected spaces for work, play, and relaxation.
Inspiration for the material palette stemmed from a unique piece of furniture; the bright blue base of the dining room table is from an old printing press, providing the colour and character template for the design. The kitchen boasts brilliant blue lower cabinets, balanced with white uppers, and open maple shelves to display personally curated artifacts. White quartz countertops with subtle blue veining provide a last detailed touch to unify the elements. The existing hardwood floor of the dining room was diligently cut for hexagon tiles, laid in an ombre mosaic to create an eye-catching and barrier-free transition into the kitchen. The subtle colour extends up the wall to become the kitchen backsplash.
The updated kitchen features clever storage solutions and ample room for more than one chef. New stainless steel appliances, hardware, and reused retro light fixtures shine in the bright and quirky space, illuminating the generous worksurfaces.
Making use of the existing double-height room, a new loft overlooks the kitchen and dining area, providing a place to be alone and in the mix at the same time. The sandy coloured net loft matches the maple wood accents, and allows the natural light to penetrate the upper and lower spaces. The bannister around the loft mimics the vaulted ceiling and wraps around the corner, ending at the bespoke safety gate and ladder.
Below the net loft, a semi-private nook is set up with integrated storage to host a variety of activities from crafting to homework for kids and adults alike. Next to this family mainframe, the front entry includes a closet for guests and auxiliary pantry space for the kitchen around the corner.
